ReadingWe want pupils to enjoy and appreciate literature and its rich variety. Pupils learn that reading is an enjoyable activity and a life skill. Younger pupils begin their reading journey through sharing and talking about stories, poems and looking for information in non- fiction texts. Phonics teaching in the Early Years builds the stepping stones of early reading. Pupils develop comprehension strategies that allow them to practice key reading skills and engage with text in a variety of ways to suit their different learning styles. We provide pupils with home reading books and library books to support their development and enjoyment of reading. |
WritingWe promote writing and look for ways to inspire and motivate pupils so that they see themselves as ‘writers’. Teachers establish the purpose and audience for writing and make teaching objectives explicit to pupils so they know why they are studying a particular text type, the kind of writing activities they need to undertake and what the expected outcome will be. |

LibraryOur school library is a very well- resourced and a stimulating learning environment that encourages a love of reading. All pupils are timetabled to visit the school library and choose books to take home which engage, interest and further their knowledge from a wide range of literature. A variety of contemporary and traditional literature are available for pupils to explore. |
DramaDrama lessons are designed to incorporate key speaking and listening English skills. Our teaching programme for drama enhances pupils’ understanding of the different genres of texts which compliment learning within English lessons. Teachers provide interactive lessons for pupils where they learn presentation skills, develop confidence when performing in front an audience, collaboration and strategies that bring texts to life. |

PhonicsAll pupils in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 are taught decoding and early reading skills through the Letters and Sounds Phonics Programme. Pupils follow a structured programme of learning to hear, identify and use different sounds to help them read and write words. Pupils become confident at using different strategies to enable them to read words and enjoy books independently. Daily lessons incorporate a range of interactive and engaging resources to enable all pupils to participate. |
